Shortest ever serious introduction to Bible scholarship

On my personal blog I pointed to a brilliant resource (HT Stephen) The Bible Style Guide claims to be "a reference text designed specifically for those working within the media industry." It also provides a "crash course in the Bible" for most other people too. It is the best introduction to biblical studies I know in just 79 pages - actually it is the only one anywhere near that short and better than most that are several times as long!

It combines very brief, down to earth glossary of key terms that people use when talking about the Bible, with a crash course in the nature of biblical literature, translation issues and adds some fascinating info on the Bible in today's world. There is probably no one who can not learn something from this free 79 page book!

If you:
  • think Ebionite is a sort of ancient plastic
  • a Codex is related to secret messages
  • a canon goes "bang"
The Bible Style Guide will soon put you right! The answers are neat, quick and sensible.

Kids, do you think the Bible is old fashioned but confused because you were brought up to think it a Holy Book?
Just get The Bible Style Guide and browse through it like a magazine.

Mature Christians (code for "not quite so longer young") who get the
Bible Style Guide will discover something new and inspiring - before breakfast and it's absolutely free!

Quite seriously this is the most compact, useful and easy to use Bible Handbook I have ever seen...

Bible 60: a new way to download an audio Bible

We are beginning to make PodBible available in a new way. Bible 60 packages chapters from the PodBible reading of the CEV in convenient clusters. Each package will be about 60 minutes, ideal to dub to a C60 cassette, or write to an audio CD, for someone who's eyesight is going, or an easy 20-30MB download to listen to on a journey...

The first book available in Bible 60 packages is the first book of the Bible, Genesis:

Guinness Book of World Records: Bible trivia

Today we reached Psalm 117, the shortest chapter in the Bible.
The day after tomorrow we tackle the very longest chapter Psalm 119.

For the computer afflicted that means jumping from 136KB for Psalm 117 to a whopping 4.23MB download for Psalm 119.

Between the two lies Psalm 118, in Protestant Bibles this is usually the chapter that people figure to be the middle chapter of the 1189 in the whole Bible.

Does this make these three Psalms special? Probably not (the chapter divisions are not after all part of the traditional Bible being invented in 1205 by Stephen Langton). But - as they say - you be the judge!

See Chapters and Verses -- Late Comers by Daniel P. Fuller for more details.

Add PodBible to your blog

If you have a WordPress blog, and want to add a link to a daily Bible chapter (in the sidebar), just go
to Widgets, and find "RSS" and "add" it then click "edit"
and use this URL for the feed: https://podbible.com/rss to add the day's section from the Bible
in a year use this URL https://podbible.com/bible-in-a-year-rss to get
just one segment a day choose to display "one item". Give the widget a
title like "Today's Bible reading" and away you go!

Sadly this does not work for blogger or other blogging platforms :( so I can't demonstrate it here, or for static webpages, but you can see it at work here https://asiabible.wordpress.com/ so, if you have a WordPress blog, how about it?

If I can discover how to do it in HTML I will post instructions here.

Downloading whole books

Someone asked me today if they could download a book at a time - it would be so much easier than chapter-by-chapter. The answer is "not yet". We'd love to make Bible books available this way, BUT we do not have enough volunteers. We are flat out just keeping the daily chapters going. So, if you know a technically literate, careful and accurate person with some time they could give... we could start repackaging the Bible in book-sized chunks (for Bible gluttons ;-) or even into CD size chunks (to supply to the elderly in your congregation as audio CDs or even cassette tapes - remember them?). Just email pod (at) podbible.com or comment here to inquire about volunteering, or to dob someone in!
